Optimism boosts health work and grades, Seligman says
Mount St. Marys College heard University of Pennsylvania psychologist Martin Seligman link optimism to performance. He described experiments with animals and people showing resilient outlooks improve coping, health, and achievement, noting optimists tend to recover faster from setbacks and outperform pessimists in jobs, grades, and even athletic performance.

Group helps Frederick homeless in city effort
The Advocates for the Homeless, founded in 1987, report rising homelessness in Frederick and say they are expanding aid. Board member Carolyn Barranca says the group is increasing outreach while volunteers from nine directors and eight churches donate funds. Since January the group spent about $30,000 helping 150 families with eviction risk, food, or security deposits as officials note more emergency requests. The organization operates as a safety net and opened two shelter apartments last month with city and county funding to house families and raise funds for more housing ideas.
