Frederick board rejects two variance requests
The Frederick Board of Zoning Appeals denied two variance requests Tuesday night, saying applicants failed to show hardship. One case involved a 3-foot rear setback variance for 270 Bishops Glen Drive sunroom addition. The other concerned Edward Sanger at 1629 Shookstown Road seeking 11-foot and 20-foot variances from 70-foot lot width and 10,000-square-foot lot size to subdivide into eight thousand plus square foot lots. Board member Ronald Peppe cited lack of hardship and risk of special privilege for neighbors. The panel also approved a 1-foot setback variance for a subdivision and a special exception for a medical billing business at Frederick Heights Apartments.

Youth Escapes Tie to Cullen Academy Case in Frederick
Frederick County Circuit Court heard testimony about a youth from the Victor Cullen Academy involved in an escape. Tim McKendrick testified he spotted two youths on Md 66 at 2:50 a.m. on June 11, and a sergeant said the pair had escaped the prior night. Tony Washington, 16, described how he and two others climbed out a dorm window using sheets, with a case manager noting he had been sent to the detention facility in 1999 on a drug charge. The judge found involvement in the escape, while disposition moved to Baltimore. Separate charges against a second youth were dismissed in a plea deal related to a Cullen-related assault.
