County budget requests push 1956 tax rate fears
Frederick County officials begin budget studies facing likely strain on the 31.40 county rate for another year. School, welfare, election, health, and library budgets seek substantial increases for 1956, including about 150000 more for schools and 4000 more for the Welfare Board. The new Planning and Zoning Commission requests 27000, while base tax gains are not expected to offset rising expenses.

Huge Crowd Sees Santa Arrive Here
A crowd of about four to five thousand gathered on Market Street Saturday night for the annual Santa Claus parade opening the Christmas buying season. Mayor Derr opened the season with a ribbon cut at Patrick and Market streets as bands from Frederick High School and Yellow Springs helped lead the float with Santa. Despite the large turnout, merchants reported mixed trade with some saying business was disappointing while others saw post parade crowds. Candy canes from Boy Scouts totaled around five thousand as traffic was diverted to ease congestion. Stores will stay open late leading up to Christmas, with extended hours through December 17 and December 22, plus 3 pm closings on December 19–22.
