At a Mexico City startup fifty years ago two doctors and a graduate student discovered a synthetic hormone from the wild yam Cabeza de Negro that became norethindrone. The finding, made in Syntex labs on Oct 15 1951 by Luis Miramantes, under Rosenkranz and Djerassi, laid the groundwork for the birth control pill and modern contraceptives.
