Weekend crashes keep Maryland police busy on slick roads

Police reported a busy weekend with several crashes on rain slick highways. Westbound I-70 traffic near Frederick snarled after noon Sunday as two accidents were investigated. One crash involved a single car near Quinn Road followed by another collision. occupants were taken to Frederick Memorial Hospital with injuries not believed serious. A second incident on U.S. 15 at 9:30 p.m. left no injuries. Earlier Saturday, a Freder ick woman sustained injuries after a two vehicle crash on the Md 355 to I-70 ramp. Eric L. Belter, 25, of South Wales New York, lost control on the ramp and collided with another vehicle, injuring Sandra Hope Rhodes, 56, who was treated at Frederick Memorial Hospital. Rhodes’s passenger Brent Rhodes 12, was not hurt. Also Saturday, a tractor trailer struck the Md 140 bridge over the Monneacy River, causing rear tandems to pull apart and the rig to strike a guardrail. the driver was unhurt. A separate crash dumped furniture along I-70 near Bill Moxley Road when a westbound rig jackknifed and separated from its trailer.

Fire log shows multiple calls from various locales

Fire log reports numerous calls in the past four hours including apartment blaze at John Kansen Apts 428 and structural fires at 3842 Burks, 4108 Bennington Place, and Wellsville areas. Local alarms sounded at several streets with units from Guardian Base Co and others responding to fires in Mount Airy, Brunswick, New Market, and Jefferson.

Mostly dry skies in East Deep South forecast

The forecast calls for dry skies in the East and Deep South while the Ohio and Tennessee valleys will be mostly fair. Scattered showers are possible in New England and western Great Lakes with snow in the Cascade and Rocky Mountains. Snow totals up to 6 inches in parts of South Dakota and southern Minnesota. Nebraska and Iowa expect 2-4 inches as rain and sleet change to snow. High winds in the Dakotas, Minnesota, and Nebraska with gusts to 40 mph. In the West, dry to partly cloudy conditions with 1-3 inch Cascade rain showers and 3-5 inch Rocky Mountain snow. Five Utah ski resorts reopen after weekend snow. Alla to open soon after 40 inches in Sunday and 7 feet since Thursday. The Four Corners, Desert Southwest and Great Basin see cooler, partly cloudy weather. Northern Rockies expected high in the mid 30s.

Travelers endure congestion after holiday travel peak

Across the nation millions faced heavy congestion at airports, highways, and railways as the first major travel period since the Sept. 1 attacks ended. Airlines reported near full flights though overall travel was expected to be down 6 percent with safety fears shaping passenger behavior.

Two Men Charged In North Market Street Prostitution Sting

Frederick police arrested two men during a prostitution sting on North Market Street. An officer posing as a prostitute was approached. William D. Hayes, 50, of New Market, faced a prostitution charge while Grafton Dorsey Sr, 45, of Frederick, was charged with prostitution and driving with suspended registration. Both were released on personal recognizance after complaints from residents.

Man 58 killed in weekend crash near Brookeville

Montgomery County Police identified William P Murphy 58 of Brookeville as the Saab driver. He allegedly sped on New Hampshire Avenue before crossing the center line and colliding with a Subaru driven by Walter L Melnik 48. The Melnik family was treated at area hospitals. two children were released after checks.
