Lynchburg Virginia November 26 Samuel T Withers aged over fifty five vice president of the First National Bank shot himself through the head in a hospital after being on sick leave from his bank since last Tuesday.
Washington reports say Democratic leaders, led by Champ Clark, favor continued tariff board support but oppose a full tariff commission with plenary powers. They seek new information from the board while insisting tariff changes originate in the House. Expect debate over reductions in wool textile and sugar schedules and advisory status for the board.
New York reports two sudden deaths from headache powders in Brooklyn, one involving 10 year old Gertrude Goldstein who died en route to Jewish Hospital, the other 44 year old Mrs Giuseppa Goulwell who died at home. Coroner orders investigation into powder brands and purchase locations as deaths appear identical.
The Vienna report notes a Velázquez equestrian portrait of Philip IV of Spain, housed at Parma's country residence, recently offered for 400000 dollars after 16 years of sale pursuit by an English art firm.
Washington, Nov. 26. James J. Hill, railroad magnate, met with President Taft at the White House and discussed politics. He said the recent election showed party lines are waning as independents grow, across labor and other classes, with demagogues losing sway and colored voters voting Democrat for the first time. He predicted in a few years party lines will be largely absent in the United States.
Robert V. Laden head of the U S parole board arrived in Atlanta to join Warden Moyer and prison physician Gr A L Fowler as they form the parole board. Twenty five inmates at the federal penitentiary are slated for consideration within the next few days.
Brazilian Congress granted the mutinous navy its demands including general amnesty and pay raises. The mutineers gained control of the fleet, with the Minas Geraes and other ships joining the revolt, while officers were killed or forced ashore. The city faced shelling before surrender and return to normalcy. British and American diplomats warned against bombardment and foreign casualties.
Two principals Charles Quinn and Joseph Vaughan were sentenced to three months in county jail and $800 fines each for tarrying and feathering Frank Siebert at McKee City over alleged relations with a woman. Accomplice Sears was fined $300 and jailed in default. In Pottsville Frank Mitchell was found guilty of murder in the Richards case and sentenced to be hanged, with execution likely in January.
In Pittsburg on November 26 Jesse Blusstone a former Pennsylvania legislator and Samuel Mosen sen were found guilty of conspiring to place Rachel Weiner aged eighteen in resorts to obtain money. Weiner testified she was lured from a local factory by promises of rich clothes while the defendants denied the charges.
