Nantucket, once home to Wampanoag Indians, grew as a summer retreat for Washington lawyers, Boston bankers, Cleveland industrialists, and New York advertising men. The 12 by 6 mile island housed 3,900 residents. It was bought by 17th century settlers for 30 English pounds and two beaver hats.

Women Voters Discuss Income Maintenance
The Frederick County League of Women Voters studied income maintenance this month in three meetings. Members heard from the National Welfare Rights Organization, the local Department of Social Services, and learned about public assistance, social security, RA, retirement, Veterans Compensation, unemployment, and workers compensation. Talks covered Medicaid and related aid programs and the poverty level defined as 3,553 dollars for a four person family, with 25.4 million Americans below poverty. The group weighed various poverty philosophies and federal proposals including President Nixon’s family assistance plan and planned consensus meetings. Next month will feature an election process and league membership information is available through president Mrs. Kaye Marallo.
