Polar Routes Open as SAS Opens Arctic Passenger Service

The Scandinavian Airlines System begins the first regular passenger flights between California and Denmark via the Arctic route, starting November 15 with twice weekly service. Eastbound flights take about 22 hours, westbound three hours longer, aided by prevailing winds. The venture unites Norwegian Danish and Swedish aircraft and crews, aided by redesigned Greenland bases and radar. The polar path shortens distance by about 600 miles but remains hazardous over ice and remote regions. Jet age viability remains uncertain until civilian jets prove economical.
