Judge rejects new trial for Frederick rapist Mercer
Edward Allen Mercer, 23, once of Third Street Frederick, had a bid for a new trial denied. He is confined to a 34 year term for violent sexual assaults in downtown Frederick after pleading guilty in 1989 to first degree rape and related charges. Judge Mary Ann Stepler ruled he received fair counsel and a voluntary plea after close questioning on possible penalties. DNA evidence and the prosecutor's case were cited in the framing of Mercer's sentence and lack of remorse was noted by the sentencing judge.
