Lobbing by Carlucci aides seeks to shield C Itoh in Toshiba sale
National Security Adviser Carlucci associates pressured journalists and senators to downplay C Itoh role in the Toshiba Machine sales to the Soviet Union. Roderick Hills led the effort, hinting at officials who would defend Itoh while a Dixon bill loomed. Ambassadors Dean and Whitehead backed the claim of Itoh as unwitting, amid State and NSC pressure. The Aug 7 NSC action aimed to limit embarrassment for Japan and others, though Sen. Dixon redrafted the bill to omit Itoh.

Letters to the Editor Debate Faith Science and Civic Values
A reader-led column contrasts ancient beliefs with modern science, arguing that science reveals facts while beliefs resist inquiry. It questions creationism versus the Big Bang, agnosticism, and rational thinking, then shifts to Frederick News-Post letters praising common sense and local education figures. The piece ends noting submission rules for letters to the newspaper.
