Three Lady Clerks In a Dilemma at Washington Post Office
Saturday morning three lady employees were trapped in an elevator at the Washington Post Office. The lift ran fast, jammed between floors, and needed load removal to fix. A ladder enabled two to escape safely while the third declined the ladder until Col Burnside assisted, after which the elevator resumed normal operation. In a Baltimore Supreme Court term case Annie Madhe vs Barbara Schuler and husband, the jury awarded $105 for slander. The court debated whether the husband could be liable under the 1838 act for his wife’s words. Judge Fisher said yes, joining the husband to the wife and overruling the arrest of judgment.
