Desperate criminal surrenders after jail shelter stay
In the mountains a man returned to Oakland and hid in a shed near the jail, surrendering the next morning to the jailer. He confessed his crime at about 11 o clock to Mr. Ison. Forty Garrett Guardsmen under Capt. Wardwell guarded the jail, turning away anyone without passes.

Railroad Shops Burned in Boston Fire
Boston and Providence railroad repair shops were struck by fire this morning. Half the store-house and two large machine shops were destroyed along with the boiler-house which housed the engines powering the other shops. The blaze leaves about 400 men unemployed and the loss is estimated around 400,000.
