October production index falls amid auto strike impact
Washington AP The October 1970 industrial production index dropped 2.3 percent, the steepest monthly fall since August 1959. The decline, driven partly by the General Motors strike and downticks in durable goods and materials, continues a three month slide despite Nixon administration hopes for a recovery. The index dropped to 162.3 of the 1957 59 base, the lowest since January 1968, with September at 166.1.

Pentagon buys Darvon in large amounts amid cost concerns
A government study cites the Defense Department’s continued purchase of Darvon, a costly painkiller, with outlays exceeding $5 million across forms. In the last 11 months the Pentagon bought over $177,000 of Darvon 32 and 65 and about $291,000 of Darvon combined with aspirin, despite experts noting mixed efficacy and availability of cheaper options. Senators and NAS-NRC panels have questioned the drug’s claimed superiority, while Lilly defends its effectiveness and physicians within and outside the military continue to prescribe it.
