Neighbors rescued a sleeping man from a burning one story duplex in Elkton at about 7 42 a m. Joseph Smith Jr was treated for smoke inhalation at Union Hospital. State fire officials said a room by room search recovered the man from a bedroom as flames were doused before firefighters arrived. The man’s sister and her husband along with their seven year old girl were home but not present at the time.
An 11 year old Germantown youth named Allan Wayne Forbes was struck by a motorcycle on Watkins Mill Road near Greenriver Terrace at 5 40 pm. He was airlifted to Children’s Hospital in critical condition while the 34 year old rider Allan Josiah French was hospitalized with head injuries. Police say the collision resulted from bicyclist error.
Middletown officials confirmed fluoride levels spiked Tuesday above normal in the town water, prompting flushing of hydrants and school water testing. By early Wednesday morning levels were back to 1 to 2 mg per liter and considered safe. no home dialysis patients were found among residents served.
A Lorton prison complex inmate was killed by stabbing at 6:20 PM in the culinary school during a day that began with predawn arrests of 14 current and former corrections employees and four inmates on drug smuggling and bribery charges. Authorities said no suspects or motives were identified and no weapon was found.
