Sinking of Italian steamer Ancona prompts Austrian inquiry
Washington reports the state department asked Austro Hungarian authorities for complete details of the Ancona sinking after an Austrian flagged submarine reportedly torpedoed the ship in the Mediterranean last week. Nine American citizens were among the victims. Ambassador Penfield was instructed to secure all available data and to determine whether the submarine was Austrian or possibly German. The Austrian admiralty statement was received through the Austrian embassy and reviewed by Secretary Lansing, who gave no public details. Also noted is a separate trial in Lancaster County for a 17 year old convicted of involuntary manslaughter in the October 12 death of Martin Maney Maney Maney.
