Study links CF to blocked CFTR protein on cell surface
New York AP reports a Genzyme study suggesting most cystic fibrosis cases arise when misformed CFTR protein never reaches the cell surface. Researchers injected mutant CFTR genes in monkey cells, finding about 70 percent produce an incompletely processed CFTR blocked by a cellular quality check. The finding supports exploring protein replacement or delivery of normal CFTR to lung cells as treatment possibilities.
