Maryland Farmers Question Price Support Plans
Price support questions dominate Maryland farmers inquiries to George J. Martin chair of the Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Committee. He says crop purchase agreements will remain available for 1955, and basic crop supports will not abruptly drop to 82 percent of parity. Secretary Benson has not decided on small grain supports pending crop reports and drought study. Formosa is noted as larger than Maryland.

Study Aims To Improve Maryland Grain Marketing
Agricultural economists at the University of Maryland study marketing problems for Maryland grain. Since 1952 a wide research program has sought solutions to storage and price inefficiencies, noting farmers often sell at harvest due to lack of drying and storage facilities and limited market information. The study includes soy bean processing considerations for the Eastern Shore.

Early Spring Planting Tips For Rice And Cover Crops
Dr Walls outlines a quick rice seed bed method using wheel hoe and light fertilization with 5-10-5 at 3 pounds per 1000 square feet, plus hand broadcasting 2 to 27 pounds of seed per 1000 square feet for a good stand. He also recommends sowing a cover crop to boost organic matter, capture soluble fertilizer, and prevent erosion, then turning it under next spring before knee height.

Fertilizer Demand Is Due For A Rise
New York November 16 Despite big jumps in fertilizer production demand should catch up to supply by 1956 according to Chemical Week. Barring a recession fertilizer demand appears set to rise for several years with competition increasing as more plants come online. The long term view suggests population growth and less tillable land will require better farming practices and heavier fertilization to meet future crop needs. In the Midwest fertilizer use has grown and agronomic tests show farmers can apply more fertilizer without cutting profits.
