Poolesville School Faces Fire Hazard Concerns
Parents and residents at a Poolesville PTA meeting learned the high school building, 45 years old, may be a fire trap for about 200 students. Tour guides highlighted absent fire escapes, oil soaked floors, rickety stairs, exposed wiring, and other hazards, while comparisons to the Damascus school spurred worries over attracting teachers. Fire Marshal Howe cautioned that keeping areas clean could keep it safe, and Principal Rhodes noted temporary spaces would be needed if the building is abandoned for a new site promised in 1951.

Seeing Eye Stick Aids Blind By Two Baltimore Brothers
Baltimore brothers Emerson and Davis Hummetlouse unveiled a mechanical seeing eye stick for the visually impaired. The rubber ball supported wand rolls ahead as a V shaped boom warns of poles, buildings, or holes, guiding the user safely around obstructions. The device is designed to roll along in front, like a powered vacuum cleaner, aiding navigation for the sightless.

Seeing eye device aids blind pedestrians in city streets
Emerson Humbhouse and his brother describe a portable seeing eye automaton weighing 1.5 pounds. They built it to warn of obstacles and guide users around hazards like hydrants. A patent is pending as they test its effectiveness with several blind users in Frederick, Maryland, amid historical notes on cravats fading after the French Revolution.
