China Reds Could Cause World Crisis
Secretary of State Acheson said the U S will explore every possibility for a peaceful settlement with Communist China over Korea and hinted at U N negotiations while warning Red China may seek a global crisis. Assistant Secretary Rusk questioned Beijing motives and stressed testing negotiable objectives to avoid a wider war. Acheson offered assurances no invasion of Manchuria and protection of China’s border interests, notably the Yalu dams, amid fears of a colossal tragedy. The comments came at a conference with 200 American organization delegates. Two Frederick residents were arrested for drunkenness on South Market Street, with hearings pending.

Postpone Formosa Decision by U N Committee
The U N Political Committee indefinitely postponed consideration of Formosa amid fears of a wider Far East war. The 53 to 0 vote shelved the Formosan issue as John Foster Dulles and Dean Acheson argued that Chinese Communist intervention in Korea altered the outlook. The panel will next address Nationalist China’s charges against the Soviet Union.
