A schooner Arab sank on Lake Michigan near Saugatuck after the tug Protection, towing her, was disabled by a rope snag. Nine teen men aboard both vessels faced danger. seventeen were saved. Capt William Keily perished with the Arab. a tug fireman also swept overboard.

West Point Military Academy reports September 1882 reorganization
The annual report of Gen. Merritt, superintendent, notes the September 1 1882 abolition of the Military Department at West Point and the post command being assumed by Merritt. It describes the restored long-standing structure and says little changed since. On September 1 1883 the academy had fifty five pre fexors and commissioned officers and 8311 cadets, with 271 cadets fewer than the prior year and no deaths among cadets or staff.

Railroad Depot Burned at Johnsonville Troy New York
A spark from a locomotive set fire to the roof of the depot at Johnsonville on the Troy and Boston railroad at midnight. The depot, three cars, and Mrs. EK M. Shehan's store were destroyed. Loss around 15 dollars, partly insured, with a strong wind aiding the blaze and the village narrowly escaping.

Terrible Death Of Thomas Richardson In Elevator Accident
Thomas Richardson of the Taylor Manufacturing Co. in St Louis died in Houston Texas after an elevator rope slipped from the pulley. Richardson and five traveling companions entered the Capital Hotel elevator to the dining room. When the door opened the rope failed to hold. One drummer jumped to safety. Richardson attempted to follow but was crushed between the transom and elevator. Bystanders tried to cut him free with axes but were unsuccessful. The others escaped as the elevator surged upward and Richardson’s body was crushed on the first floor. Richardson was a well known traveling man with family in Texas and St Louis. Hotel not blamed. the failure was the rope slipping off the pulley. Commercial friends have raised funds for the family. Baltimore American.
