Collective bargaining talks begin for Montgomery County workers
Negotiations are expected to start soon on the first collective bargaining contract for county government workers in Montgomery County. Local 400 of the United Food and Commercial Workers Union represents about 3,600 workers and will draft proposals. Excludes ~2,000 workers such as department heads and probationary staff. The move mirrors long standing bargaining by teachers and police. Maryland public employees lack binding arbitration rights. Local 400 covers grocery and department store workers plus some health care and insurance staff in the Washington area. The drive may take years and could ignite tensions with other unions.
