Tawes Hails Giving Land For District
Maryland Gov. J Millard Tawes praised the 69 square miles donated to the federal government 172 years ago for the District of Columbia. Speaking to the Washington Rotary Club he called the Washington Baltimore region a growing two center metropolis with a combined population projected at 3 million by 2000. He cited science research and industry as key growth drivers and noted Baltimore’s port as essential to regional trade. The Conestoga wagon origin is mentioned.
