Drought conditions spark two major fires in Frederick County with 24 acres charred and a second blaze of over two acres near Hyattstown. State Forest Supervisor Herman D. Toms oversaw fireline construction as 50 firefighters from nearby towns battled terrain on South Mountain and Fort Ritchie. No cause yet determined.

A 19 year old Howard county girl identified as Ellen Cockrell of Clarksville died after a collision with an empty oil tank truck at U S 40 and Turf Valley road west of Ellicott City. The truck driver Charles Buzzard of New Market was treated for injuries. State Police said Cockrell failed to yield the right of way.

James Monroe Roberts twenty four of West Fatrick street was ordered held for grand jury action on a breaking and entering charge after a preliminary hearing. He allegedly tried to break into a cabin at Mountain dale October third where owner Charles F Hartman was present and fired a shot at an intruder. Roberts says he was shot in Frederick City prompting the investigation by Cpl I Stafford. In a separate case Magister Bennett continued a hearing for Nathaniel Wyman Gail liard twenty one of Lincoln Apartments on three counts of destruction of property and three counts of petty larceny related to robbing machines at Hahn s American Service Station Harold s Esso Station and Weil Bros Service Station on October 28. he was arrested November 5 and a lawyer is being appointed.

An 18 year old county boy, Larry Russell Strube of RFD 2 Frederick, was charged with grand larceny after being found with about 500 dollars worth of auto parts from Sam Warfield’s used car lot on West Patrick street. Parts included carburetors distributors engine heads and batteries. Police had received October complaints and had monitored Warfield's lot. Arrest by Officer James E. Schroyer. Bond set at 1000 dollars.
