Commercial Rivalry Is Beginning Across the World
Washington reports a budding commercial rivalry as nations edge toward conflict that could disrupt economic plans for the free world. Officials warn this may combine with nationalistic waves to trigger controls on imports and exports and even economic war amid Allied efforts to form international accords. The United States advocates free world trade opposed to preferential schemes, while Britain faces domestic debates on collaboration versus a solo approach and possible shifts toward state control if markets tighten. Russia remains an open question in Iran and Europe amid competing imperial aims and lend-lease concerns.

The 24th Division advanced up to three miles toward Ormoc, capturing Mt Catabaran and pushing from Hill 1525 as heavy air and artillery support aided progress against entrenched Japanese defenses. Nipponese attempts to break the squeeze faltered despite reinforcements, with carrier planes destroying a convoy off Ormoc and American airstrikes battering Ormoc town. The push continued along the Ormoc corridor as U.S. forces closed in from east and south, while First Cavalry units faced mounting resistance near Mt. Pina.
