Italy Halts Planes Sale to Egypt amid arms race
Rome reports Italy will refuse export licenses for 30 Italian-made Vampire jets bound for Egypt, marking a West pause in the Middle East arms buildup. The move follows prior private shipments and Western cautions about escalating conflict near the Suez Canal, with Cairo eyeing further arms buys as Egypt defends itself against perceived Soviet and Western hesitations. The case overlaps with U.N. mediation efforts in Cairo led by General Burns as Hamid al-Skjold proposals circulate for easing Israeli Egyptian frontier tensions.

Heavy Rains Threaten Trees In Low Areas
Heavy autumn rains may cause moisture stress for shade and ornamental trees in low-lying areas. Damage could appear next spring as yellowing leaves and dieback of twigs and branches, with many trees actually standing in underground pools despite no surface water.
Trees Struggle With Excess Water Need Aeration Now
High water table weakens roots in low areas as soil air is displaced. Cultivation to break hardpan and aerate surface helps evaporation and seedbed prep. Willows and swamp maples tolerate wet feet. maples and elms fare poorly after prolonged flooding. Also notes weed control and herbicide trials.
