Former Labor Secy Is Dead
Martin P. Durkin former secretary of labor and AFL union leader died at 61 after brain surgery and a September hospital admission. He served under Eisenhower from 1952 to 1953 and led the United Association of Journeymen and Apprentices of the Plumbing and Pipefitting Industry. Survived by his widow Anna H. McNicholas and three sons.

Labor Unions Gain Members Across 1950s Growth
Washington Nov 13 The Labor Department reports U S labor unions grew to about 18 million members at the start of 1955 with roughly one million in Canada. AFL and CIO memberships stood at 10.9 million and 5.2 million respectively, plus 1.8 million in independent unions. The era shows a steady ratio of about one in three nonfarm workers in unions. Merger talks between AFL and CIO loom next month.

French Honor Society Announces National Slogan-Poster Contest
Pi Delta Phi will launch a national slogan poster contest for high school students of French. Sponsored by Omega chapter at Saint Joseph College Emmitsburg the sixth in the society's culture contest series. Entrants must craft an original French slogan reflecting France history literature or culture. February 15 deadline. Returns To U. S. After 4-Mos Visit In France
Dorothy V. Keller of Jefferson Maryland completes a four month IFYE exchange in France and sails home aboard the Liberte November 14. The 21 year old 4-H member will share her experiences with youth groups and civic clubs to promote international understanding. Keller, daughter of Henry S. Keller, has farmed since childhood, raising 20 dairy calves and serving nine years in 4-H club work, including a presidency.
