Maryland Fraternity Initiation Ends in Student Death
The X Pat Chi Fraternity at the University of Maryland initiated candidates at Jr. C. U. A. Hall in Baltimore. Martin Loew, a Cologne dental student, was found dead in his room after the initiation ceremony amid accusations of a hazardous rite. Ephriam Stone, his roommate, recovered and testified about the ritual consumption of a mysterious liquid. Dr. Stanley B. Smith, fraternity president, and Dr. N. G. Rkeile led autopsy and investigation. police seized initiation paraphernalia including a ceremonial sheet, a crockery bowl, a slapstick, and a heavy bag. The coroner awaits verdict, with Nichols charged. The incident also involved Eliva Waltman and other students.
