Pan American Pays $5,000 Fine
Pan American World Airways paid a 5000 dollar FAA fine after a 707-121 from San Juan to Philadelphia via Baltimore banked steeply on takeoff from Friendship International Airport. The FAA cited a broken outboard aileron control rod and noncompliance with a 1960 directive to replace aluminum rods with steel. The crew safely returned the crippled aircraft with no injuries.
