Students learn ecology on Smith Island voyage with teacher

Seventeen Middletown High School students and biology teacher Ron Albaugh spent three days at the Chesapeake Bay Foundation Smith Island Center exploring life on the island in its natural state and as a human habitat. They joined canoe trips, birdwatching, marsh treks, and oyster tastings while discussing global issues like deforestation and carbon dioxide. The trip inspired plans to raise funds for a dissolved oxygen monitor and to pursue environmental preservation, with hopes to study endangered species and habitat restoration. Ann Stewart noted cold conditions in a Foundation house, while students like Missy Dirks and Heidi Ricker spoke about conservation and practical steps to curb pollution and protect ecosystems.
