Silver Spring man charged in home fire

A 36 year old Silver Spring man, Joseph Roger Griffin of 8710 Reading Road, was charged with setting a fire that caused $100,000 damage to his own home late Tuesday night. He is held in the county detention center in Rockville on $10,000 bond after questioning by the county fire marshal with help from the federal ATF. No injuries were reported.

Western Maryland Weather Outlook Tonight Through Monday

The Western Maryland region including Carroll Frederick Howard Montgomery and Washington counties faces windy cold conditions tonight with lows in the mid to upper 30s and north winds 15 to 25 mph. Friday brings mostly sunny breezy and cold weather with highs in the upper 40s and winds 10 to 20 mph. The Maryland Mountains portion shows mostly cloudy windy cold tonight with lows in the mid to upper 20s and north winds 15 to 25 mph, then mostly sunny breezy cold Friday with highs in the low 40s and north winds 10 to 20 mph. Extended forecast through Monday calls for fair and cold Saturday and Sunday with highs 50s and lows in the 20s to low 30s, then cooler with a chance of showers Monday, highs upper 50s to low 60s and lows in the low to mid 40s.

Unseasonably warm air breaks records across regions

Unseasonably warm air surged from the southern Plains to New England, breaking multiple daily high temperature records. Readings reached 69 in Portland Maine and 78 at Boston Logan, while northern areas cooled behind a front. Weather cautions included gale warnings over the Great Lakes and widespread showers from the Gulf Coast to the Atlantic, with forecasts of snow by evening in parts of New York and Vermont.

Woman, 22, in serious condition after accident

A 22 year old Rockville woman Irene Czypera was seriously injured when the dump truck she drove on Md 118 in Germantown crashed through a guardrail and fell 30 feet to railroad tracks. She is at Suburban Hospital with multiple broken bones after the 6:30 a.m. crash. Commuter trains were halted and traffic rerouted. The truck owned by Robert Martens Excavating jumped the curb. cause under investigation. Czypera had worked for three months and had come from Michigan.
