Republican Roscoe Bartlett defeated Democrat Tom Hattery by 18,931 votes in the 6th District contest ending a bitter campaign. Bartlett carried Frederick Garrett Carroll and Washington counties while Allegany and Howard tipped to Hattery. overall totals stood 119,684 to 100,753 with Bartlett winning five counties. He credited a backlash against Hattery’s treatment of retiring Rep Beverly Byron and spoke after a victory party at his West Church Street headquarters.
