Young wins mayoral race as Dems seize 4 of 5 alderman seats
Frederick City voters elected Democrat Ronald N. Young to a third term as mayor. The city board of aldermen swung from Republican to Democratic control with Young defeating Republican John F. Lewis 3 303 to 2 440. Incumbent Alderman James Murphy led the council tickets with 3 012 votes, while Democrat 4H. Thomas Summers had 2 751. Republican Cy Bartgis won one seat with 2 738, and Democrats Allen G. Merchant and C. Arlene Phillips followed. Final slot unsettled as 250 absentee ballots counted. Voter turnout was about 42 percent of 13 712 registered.
