City polls show turnout rising as voting begins
At the National Guard Armory polling started at 8 am with 30 to 35 in line. By 10 am about 6.7 percent of registered voters had voted and officials predicted near 40 percent turnout citywide. Through 11 am 12.5 percent of armory voters had cast ballots with similar activity at South End Civic Association and North Frederick Elementary. Democrats and Republicans were running roughly half and half at two sites, while civic association votes favored Democrats. Supervisor George T. Schroeder Jr. called the flow steady with no lines.

Middletown student hurt in school lab explosion
Richard A. Lewis a senior at Middletown High School was burned in a lab explosion in a glassed in work area next to the science room. He received intravenous treatment and was flown to a burn unit. The science room was flooded by water but the fire was quickly extinguished by sprinklers and classes moved to the auditorium for the day.

Born April 10 1905 she was active in many groups including Frederick Memorial Hospital Auxiliary Frederick County Landmarks Foundation and Frederick County Historical Society. She helped list Old St Pauls Church on the National Historic Register and supported several charities before funeral services set for November 5 at All Saints Episcopal Church.
