Pen pal from Australia visits county woman
Margaret Koczak and Joyce Routzahn started as school pen pals in Australia and the United States. They toured regionally, beat men’s all-star teams on bases and in towns like Brookville and Luray, drawing up to 5,000 fans at Fort Meade. The mostly female squad, with up to three men in key roles, played to win with flair and vaudeville tricks, leaving a lasting memory of women’s baseball in a time when communities rallied on weekends.
