Enzymes in Fungi May Offer Natural Insect Control
USDA scientists identify enzymes in insect eating fungi that could help farmers curb corn cabbage wheat pests. They envision inserting enzymes into fungi and mass producing fungal spores to spray on crops with safety for plants and the environment. Laboratory tests show fungi killed about half of target insects in four days. BRDC supports further development and patent filing.

Seeds may be bad for home gardeners say seed expert
Steve Solomon of Harrowsmith warns seed packets yield uneven results and that small retailers are treated as uncritical. He says primary growers, mainly large corporations, supply merchandisers who ship to the public, while farmers gain the most profit and ungerminated seeds can look identical. Buy from reputable companies to avoid poor seed quality.

Two pests nag housesplants fungus gnats and springtails
Fungus gnats and springtails menace indoor houseplants despite low damage. Gnats molt through life stages in moist soil, multiply rapidly, while springtails mainly feed on decaying matter and pose little threat. Begin with sterile soil, then targeted pyrethrin sprays and soil drying to curb infestations.
Lyme disease threat becomes real in Maryland study
A statewide deer tick survey in Maryland found deer ticks are present and can carry Lyme disease. Frederick County shows low tick numbers but officials urge vigilance and prevention. Ticks go through larva, nymph, and adult stages with a two year life cycle. People should check for ticks, wear light clothing, use repellents, and remove ticks promptly with tweezers.
