County Eastalco reach accord on water rates

After weeks of talks Frederick County and Eastalco Aluminum Company agreed on water charges for the Buckeystown plant. Eastalco will pay a flat 430000 annually for up to 1.6 million gallons daily, a roughly half of the original proposed difference.

Frederick considers beer garden at Fourth of July festival

Frederick officials weigh a compromise allowing beer sales at the Fourth of July festival in Baker Park in a confined beer garden. Monocacy River may gain 50-foot buffer if counties back plan

Frederick and Carroll counties consider a plan by the Monoecacy Scenic River Citizens Advisory Board to set a 50 foot buffer along both shoreline sides. A public hearing was unanimously approved by Frederick County to advance the proposal. The plan urges identifying sensitive areas within the buffer and calls for environmentally sensitive land planning, project coordination and stormwater management as growth pressures rise. The final adoption rests with local governments before state review and potential General Assembly approval next January.

Shannon Dillingham, 18, Poolesville High School class president once near death from a rare blood disease, will graduate. She plans to study education at Montgomery College and then Georgetown University, crediting friends and the small senior class of 83 for support as she moves toward a teaching career.
