Consumer named key in fighting inflation in 1951
Dr. Arthur F. Burns of the National Bureau of Economic Research credits the consuming public as a pivotal force in curbing inflation in 1951. He notes frugal purchases and increased personal savings rose from 1949 to 1951, though warns there is no guarantee the consumer will refrain from future spending. He adds the consumer is a complex economic figure, capable of stirring up uncertainty alongside investors and entrepreneurs. Government economists point to cost of living rises since April 15 and blame higher fruit and vegetable prices for the spring surge.
