Defoliating Caterpillars In Maryland Prompt Cautions

Maryland Secretary of Agriculture Lewis R Riley reports spring infestations of defoliating caterpillars in Prince George's County and the Eastern Shore. Species include eastern tent caterpillar forest tent caterpillar and canker worm, with gypsy moth present in many areas. Experts note trees usually recover after short outbreaks but heavy combined populations can cause lasting damage. Officials say no separate control program this spring, as insecticides for gypsy moth will affect the other species. homeowners are advised not to assume tree death and to seek extension service guidance.
