States ease on speeders triggers aid cuts in two states

Washington reports that the Transportation Department will cut highway aid to Arizona and Vermont for failing to curb speeding motorists, the first use of withholding funds for not enforcing the 55 mph limit. Vermont and Arizona face up to 10 percent reductions, about 1.5 million and 5.1 million respectively, with officials citing noncompliance in 1984 and 1965. Maryland, Rhode Island, and New Hampshire also under review, while Virginia and West Virginia show stronger enforcement among the states surveyed. Vermont plans to appeal, arguing the 55 mph standard is unfair to a rural state with few 55 mph roads.
