Grocers Can Hike Ceilings on Food Prices
Washington May 28 government authorized about 390000 retail grocers to raise ceilings by roughly a penny on hundreds of food items. Price Stabilizer Ellis Arnall said the move will lift the public food bill by 100 to 150 million dollars yearly and average five cents per week for each family. The higher ceilings take effect June 2 in independent and chain stores as margins widen from cost to selling price to give grocers pricing flexibility and boost sagging earnings.
