Voice recorder points to fire in ValuJet 592 cabin

Washington AP report says the cockpit voice recorder from ValuJet Flight 592 captured indications of fire in the passenger cabin and oxygen problems just before the May 11 crash in the Florida Everglades. Investigators noted melted seat frame, damaged beam structures, and oxygen canisters in the front cargo hold that were not authorized for carriage. Francis cautioned that analysis is ongoing and some details remain unclear.

Memorial Day Observances Honor Veterans in Frederick County

Dozens in Woodsboro and about 50 in Walkersville attended Memorial Day ceremonies. Richard Santos, from Greenbelt, recalled the fallen from Civil War battles to Iraq, urging living to carry the torch of liberty. Col. George E. Lewis Jr. spoke in Walkersville on duty to keep democracy alive and to honor veterans at cemeteries on the way home.

Normandy Veterans Honored With Medallions At Memorial Service

Lee Woods wore a World War I Eisenhower jacket with a Normandy medallion at Memorial Day honors. Col. Tom Baker, for Normandy Gov. Rene Garrec, presented about 50 gold medals to Normandy battle veterans. Ceremony moved to Francis Scott Key American Legion Post 11 due to rain.

Minnie Myerly 100 dies in Frederick Maryland

Minnie Louise Bodmer Myerly 100 of Frederick died Friday May 24 at Homewood Retirement Center. Born June 20 1895 in Poolesville she was a longtime Methodist worker with her late husband Rev Harry Stockton Myerly. She supported missions and community groups and was active in Calvary United Methodist Church.
