Mrs General Jane Johnson Led Maryland Confederate Women
More than 20,000 Marylanders went South in the Civil War era, driven by devotion to their homes and cause. Jane Claudia Saunders Johnson, wife of Bradley T. Johnson, became known as Mrs General for her fundraising and leadership. She moved between North Carolina and Virginia, securing rifles, cartridges, and funds to support Maryland Confederates and their struggle along the Potomac and beyond.
