Maryland Attorney General Holt Hammond ruled that the state sales tax act is not subject to referendum or popular ballot. The measure, effective June 1, funds state government through appropriations. attempts to place it on the ballot are null and void. Bainbridge Center May Be Leased Soon
The Bainbridge Naval Training Center at Bainbridge Maryland will be placed on caretaker status June 30 and most of the base offered for lease. Commodore William W Behrens 46 will retire July 3 with reports he may leave the Navy rank of rear admiral. The property title will stay with the Navy and a user may operate excess facilities under revokable lease. The base once trained 30000 recruits but now hosts only the Naval Academy Preparatory School with about 1200 students. Behrens earned the Navy Cross for heroism off Formosa in 1944 and led Bainbridge starting in 1945.

Surviving Airmen Await Rescue in Nicaragua Jungle
Six survivors of a Fortress crash in Nicaragua’s jungles remained awaiting helicopter rescue as search and rescue continued despite a country revolt. Three individuals were found in separate locations while another group of three stayed together. Sustenance and instructions were dropped to each group and windmill-like helicopters were used to reach the jungle floor. An Army Air Rescue Service spokesperson said operations continued with no interruption, and efforts to locate the remaining four missing men persisted as planes photographed the search area near Managua.
