Senate Upholds Pay Bill Veto
The Senate upheld President Eisenhower's veto of an 8.6 percent postal pay increase, 54-39, falling short of the two thirds needed to override. Thirty seven Republicans supported Eisenhower, joined by two Democrats, with 46 Democrats and eight Republicans voting to override. Prospects for a smaller raise remained. Carlson proposed an 8 percent plan retroactive to March, and Johnson offered a similar Democratic compromise minus job realignment. The vote followed a three hour debate as spectators, including postal workers, filled the galleries.
