First non living anthrax vaccine awarded at Camp Detrick
Dr. George G. Wright, a chem corps supervisory bacteriologist at Camp Detrick, received the Exceptional Civilian Service Award from Maj. General William A. Creasy at the Pentagon for developing the first non living anthrax vaccine acceptable for human testing. Wright’s work began in 1948, using a defined medium and soluble enzymes to isolate a vaccine antigen, eliminating foreign proteins and reducing adverse reactions. The vaccine, tested on several hundred people with no toxic effects, is under a U. Wright, born 1916, educated at Olivet College and Caltech, is a member of several scientific societies and continues in the Camp Detrick Medical Investigation Division.
