Beaver Pa May 25 Senator Quay’s doctors report chronic gastritis with no complications and no liver disease. Medical experts from New York and local physicians agree on a favorable outlook, though the patient may have sudden changes in condition.
Ohio Democrats show conservatives in control two to one against Hearst in preliminary convention skirmishes. Kilbourne and Harmon favored by factions. no clear leader emerges. McLean influence resurfaces as possible national committee member for St Louis. Also reports on church union approval and new Lake Superior charter. An unknown black man lynched in O Neill Mississippi. Beaumont fire destroys 50 houses in the tenderloin district.
May 25 dispatches report General Kuroki noting a Japanese infantry action that defeated about 200 Cossacks near Toutac Kou eight miles northeast of Kuang Tien with 20 dead on the Russian side and no Japanese losses. Further skirmishing around Liao Yang continues as Japan marks time awaiting Korean reserves.
Russian officials discount a telegram claim of a Japanese land attack on Port Arthur with 15 000 Japanese casualties and 3000 Russian losses. The Russian consul at Cuanfon reported the figures but no independent confirmation has been received, so the report is not credited.
Robert Roberts Hitt, possibly Roosevelts running mate, was a leading early shorthand writer who reported the Lincoln Douglas debates. He has served twenty two years as the congressman from Minnes Ninth district.
Washington reports the Japanese legation ridicules a Russian claim of attacking Port Arthur and repelling the assault. They argue no attack will occur for weeks as Port Arthur is cut off from supplies and wearing down, making a costly assault folly. Also notes plans to report on floating mines threatening neutral shipping off Manchuria and positions for a possible port defense.
New York May 29 The Interstate Commerce Commission reopened its inquiry into the anthracite coal trade against the Philadelphia and Reading Railway and other carriers. Attorney Shearn won the right to compel answers on contracts that allegedly bind operators to form a coal trust. Temple Iron contracts with Simpson Watkins and various guarantors were produced. Baer recalled the cost per ton varied, higher after a strike decision, while mineral prices adjusted downward. Walter testified that the tonnage pact aimed to protect Temple Iron from a potential independent railroad, with Lehigh Valley asserting the arrangement was nonbinding. Baer called Temple Iron a sound business, and warned against guaranteeing funds except in strikes or disasters. He assessed Reading could net $5 million yearly on a 4% basis, and said tariff cuts might not lower consumer coal prices if firms seek higher returns.
