Poison Plants in Maryland Pastures Put Cattle at Risk

Botanist Russell G Brown of the University of Maryland warns that common pasture plants like wild cherry and Water Hemlock are deadly if eaten by cows. Leaves of wild cherry yield amygdalin producing hydrocyanic acid when wilted. Water Hemlock thrives in swamps and ditches with roots and new shoots dangerous to livestock. Parents are cautioned against children chewing these roots. The plant grows from four to seven feet with small white flowers resembling wild carrot. Brown's pastures inspections include cases where seven young heifers died from Water Hemlock.
