Polio vaccine debate amid public confusion and safety checks
Public Health Service faced criticism for shifting stance on the Salk vaccine. Dr. Scheele and HEW officials were urged to be clearer to the public as conflicting statements caused parental worry. Early promising results in Ann Arbor sparked publicity, but warnings and lab-clearances followed, with Cutter vaccine involved and continued testing of other labs. Insect demonstration and local notices follow.
