Fighting Mine Fire at Hazel Kirke Golliery Pittsburg
Miners form bucket brigades to fight a fire at Hazel Kirke mine No 1 owned by Pittsburg and Westmoreland Coal Company near Washington. The blaze started in an engine house and spread to a warehouse and tipple, causing $25 000 in damage and threatening air shafts and equipment. Large rescue efforts included a bucket brigade of 300 miners and water drawn through the air shaft to suppress the flames.
