W H Stuart American vice consul and ship broker was shot and killed near his Manziadjani home in Batoum. The assassin fled after firing from trees a half mile from his residence, Stuart died two hours after being taken to a nearby military barracks.
Senator Beveridge introduces a bill to enlarge the inspection service within the Department of Agriculture. Inspectors may destroy condemned meat for domestic or foreign consumption and laws are clarified to remove misunderstandings about inspector authority.

In New York on May 1 the Nirvana balloon crewed by Dr Julian P. L. Thomas and Charles Levee ascended from Port Morrison on the Harlem river. Thomas said the flight was an endurance test and would continue as long as provisions allowed. The balloon rose to 7000 feet, drifted toward Central Park, then north past Sing Sing with winds pushing it over Tarrytown and Yonkers.
Philadelphia May 22 X Baxter Utica judge and former Penn star high jumper suffered a serious Achilles injury during a Franklin Field high jump attempt. He had been invited to coach Penns high jumpers and give a display on proper technique. The leg tendon snap or strain could leave him permanently lame.
New York May 22 Judge Crane in Brooklyn sentenced William Metelski the so called Masonic burglar to forty years hard labor in Sing Sing prison. Metelski 27 son of a Brooklyn business man and his accomplice fainted in court as the sentence was pronounced. He confessed to burgling property from a Mason member and said he had practiced burglary nightly for three months.
May 22 report from Russian Poland describes a Jewish revolutionary throwing a bomb at Count Keller, a dragoon colonel, while riding. Keller survived after receiving numerous wounds. the bomber was captured after a hedge chase with sabers used by soldiers.
A brief notice recommends applying Chamberlains Salve to a child before nursing to aid a cure. Use a soft cloth to wipe away before nursing. The salve is priced at 23 cents per box and sold at A. L. Pearre’s Drug Store.
Washington May 22 A House debate on the interstate and foreign commerce rate bill ends with a recommendation to send all Senate amendments to conference. Jennie Gilliosti a 12 year old girl and daughter of an Italian miner died from severe burns after filling a gunpowder keg in the cellar of her Carnegie Pennsylvania home. The blast hurled her across the cellar and set her clothes aflame as researchers and a passing miner attempted to extinguish the fire.
Burglars blew open the Glassboro New Jersey post office safe but fled as George Benneger, night watchman of the opposite bank, fired on them. The exchange sent bullets into the post office and wall, with no confirmed hits reported.
